AI-generated answers and chat-based search now sit in front of a large share of searches before a user ever reaches a list of blue links. That’s a real shift — but it changes what SEO should prioritize, not whether SEO still matters.
What’s actually changed
- Fewer clicks on informational queries. When an AI answer fully satisfies a simple question, fewer users click through — which shifts the value of ranking for those queries downward.
- AI answer engines cite sources. Being cited inside an AI-generated answer is a new, meaningful visibility channel — separate from, but related to, traditional rankings.
- Structured, well-organized content is easier for models to parse and cite accurately. Clear headings, direct answers near the top of a page, and well-marked-up data all make a page more likely to be pulled into an AI answer correctly.
What hasn’t changed
- Technical fundamentals still matter. Site speed, crawlability, and clean structured data remain the foundation both traditional rankings and AI citation depend on.
- Transactional and local intent still route to real sites. Someone searching to book a service or buy a specific product still needs to land on an actual business’s page — AI overviews rarely fully satisfy that intent on their own.
- Genuine topical authority still compounds. Thin, keyword-stuffed content performs worse than ever; well-researched, genuinely useful content performs better than ever, in both traditional and AI-driven discovery.
Where to actually spend effort in 2026
Prioritize the queries where a click still matters most — high-intent, transactional, and local searches — over purely informational queries an AI answer will likely intercept anyway. Structure content so both a search crawler and a language model can parse it cleanly: clear headers, direct answers, and legitimate structured data. And keep investing in the fundamentals that never stopped mattering — a fast, well-built site is still the baseline every ranking system, human or AI, is evaluating against.
